Prayer & Benediction for Peace
in Honor of Gurumayi Chidvilasananda’s Birthday 2019

On the occasion of her birthday it is Gurumayi’s wish that we offer a prayer and benediction for peace in this world.

Gurumayi has taught us about the three forms of light: the sun, the moon, and fire. Through fire, the earth connects to the firmament.

Gurumayi has also taught us how to approach the fire with reverence and devotion. When we worship fire, we offer our prayers to all three forms of light. We honor the light of the universe, the light of the heart. And as the smoke of the fire carries our prayers to the heavens, our prayers are heard.

The prayer and benediction that Gurumayi has chosen for us to offer are from the Vedas and Upanishads.

Gurumayi says, “The light of grace follows the light of peace. The light of peace follows the light of grace.”

Prayer for Peace

These prayers are from these sources: Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 1.3.28. and Yajur-veda 36.17.

I offer my heartfelt gratitude to Gurumayi for giving us this prayer.

Sometimes I feel sad at what is happening to our wonderful planet. When I offer this prayer and benediction, I feel I am lifting up both the Earth and myself, letting light in, letting grace in.

A friend of mine built a fire outdoors so that we could offer this prayer given to us by Gurumayi. We stood in front of the fire and silently contemplated our intentions. We read the prayer aloud, taking turns with each verse. We felt peaceful as we watched the smoke cascade upward through the high treetops, toward the heavens. A very sweet fragrance arose from the fire. In a few minutes the treetops started to sway and clouds gathered; then we experienced strong gusts of wind, followed by a cooling rain.

Reciting this prayer together, with the sublime backdrop of offerings being made to the sacred fire, was for me one of the highlights of Gurumayi’s Birthday celebration. During the recitation, I was drawn deeply inside and I experienced my heart connection to all of the others in the Siddha Yoga Universal Hall, as we sent our heartfelt prayers, knowing without a doubt that they are received. What a beautiful conclusion to an extraordinary, grace-filled morning!
