Yoga — Skill in Action III
Offering Seva in Shree Muktananda Ashram

Seva, selfless service, is one of the core spiritual practices on the Siddha Yoga path. At Shree Muktananda Ashram, staff and visiting Siddha Yogis from around the world offer their skills, talents, and energy in support of the SYDA Foundation’s work—serving the Siddha Yoga Mission.

In a great scripture of India, Shri Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna teaches, "Yoga is skill in action." By serving with love and attentiveness, we cultivate proficiency, self-confidence, joy, and evenness of mind, and we strengthen our connection to the inexhaustible source of joy and power at the core of our being. Practicing seva in this way, we move toward attaining the goal of yoga: the steady awareness of our union with the Self.

As you view these photos of Siddha Yogis engaged in many different types of seva, you are invited to reflect on how each expresses skill in action through qualities such as focus, respect, and enthusiasm.

The images of Siddha Yogis offering seva at Shree Muktananda Ashram inspire me to perform my daily activities as seva—selfless service. When I do this, I experience my home and my workplace as an extension of the Ashram; I feel inwardly connected and filled with contentment, peace, love, and joy.

Viewing this photo gallery reminded me of a time that my three-year-old son and I visited Shree Muktananda Ashram in the spring. We were given a seva assignment to pull weeds in one of the gardens. It was a large area and many other sevites were also pulling weeds. It was a beautiful day and everyone seemed to be enjoying tending the garden.

Everyone was quiet and focused until my son jumped up, all excited, and said, “Look, everybody! I found a worm!” Laughter erupted in the garden. There was a feeling of love and grace in the laughter. His excitement spread through all of us.

I am so grateful for the experiences we had at the Ashram and for all the wonderful memories.

Each image sparkles with the elegant simplicity and profound mystery of seva. May I live my life as an offering at my Guru’s feet. I pray that everyone could be blessed with the opportunity to offer seva, which enriches the heart and uplifts the world. Seva is brimming with consciousness and grace.

My heart flows with gratitude for the loving care these sevites are offering at Shree Muktananda Ashram. I feel that they are offering for all of us. The photos show how the Ashram radiates with shakti and beauty.

As I offer seva locally, I feel we are all unified as one in service. What a gift to be able to offer seva!

I love the photo gallery “Yoga—Skill in Action.” When I look at the photos, I imagine what it would be like to be in Shree Muktananda Ashram. Very often I see that the sevites are doing the same things I do in my part of the world, and that similarity brings me a lot of joy. I feel I am in both Shree Muktananda Ashram and my part of the world at the same time. I offer my gratitude to Gurumayi and to all the sevites for these photos, which bring such joy.

The three musicians playing the tamboura emanated such a beautiful energy and a state of pure peace and tranquility. It was such a delightful feeling to greet me first thing in the morning!

I love looking at the precious images of all the Siddha Yogis offering seva. They seem to me like spring bees at work, and I can feel that they love what they do! I especially love the little children enjoying the colors of Holi.

These photos clearly show “Love in Action”!

In the photo of the person putting protective wire around a tree trunk, the roll of wire on the ground looks to me like a heart. That made me think that simply everything in Shree Muktananda Ashram seems to express love.

When I saw the young girl in the picture looking at me from behind the tree, tears came to my eyes. I felt so much love. I realized: this is skill in action. This is love in action.

This girl shows me how to be connected to the trees and how to share love. She shows me what it means to leave a trail of light for others. For this girl in the picture, this may not have been a huge thing, but I felt she was surely walking on the path of love and radiating light.

And I too was able to see this light.

It inspires me to have the same level of concentration, determination, and love as I go about my own daily activities and life.
