While contemplating “The medium of time,” I found that one dictionary definition of the word medium is “a method or way of expressing something.” Time is expressed through various names such as era, decade, or week, and phrases such as happy times, challenging times, or blessed times. These forms are expressions of timelessness. But it is through the medium of just one of these forms—the present moment—that I’m able to tap into timelessness.

I experience different shades of timelessness in meditation: sometimes when I emerge from meditation, it feels as though I’d been in the velvety experience of meditation for hours whereas it may actually have been only a few minutes. At other times, I experience the opposite.

Just as the heart’s formless love is expressed through the tangible form of the virtues, similarly these very tangible expressions of time are the doorway ushering me into timelessness, the limitless expanse of the inner world which I understand to be the Self, that which is beyond the beyond.

All I need to do is simply be—be in this moment.

I have often heard people say that as they work toward a goal and face challenges, time works for them. In this way they use “the medium of time.“ From my own experience, I know that time contributed to a healing process for me and that my exercising the virtue of patience was supported by “the medium of time” in this process.

As I fill my life with spiritual practices and contemplation of the teachings given by my Guru, I see that, over the years, a sense of peace, joy, and freedom is rising in me—like spring flowers enjoying “the medium of time.“

    The medium of time

Time is the medium for me to appreciate

    how tenderly leaves sprout,

    how peacefully nature smiles,

    in spring;

    how my love is growing!

Shaktipat will always be within me.

    In “the medium of time,”

I step forward to my Guru,

    her presence enlightens my consciousness.

    I am the Self!

    I am the Self!

    I am the Self!

I experience “the medium of time” as infinite and eternal love. When I am in my heart, then my intentions, actions, and relationships reflect this love and are beneficial. This beneficial aspect shines through, both in joyful moments and in moments when I need to set a firm boundary with myself or others.

I feel love is the essence of Consciousness and can be felt instantly by others, even over a distance. One way I practice this is to touch others, including my wife, with my love before I touch them with my words or body.

Love is the magical, mysterious “medium of time.”
