Svadhyaya Study Session III

Wednesday, September 30, 2020

Dear readers,

Namaste!

I am very happy to share with you that in each of the upcoming Svādhyāya Study Sessions, you will be reciting selected verses of Shri Guru Gita. In each session, you will be learning and studying a specific facet of svādhyāya and putting this learning into practice during the recitation.

The focus of Study Session III is pronunciation of the Sanskrit syllables in Shri Guru Gita. Pronouncing the syllables with greater precision has many benefits, such as making the mind steady and focused.

The study session will take place on Saturday, October 3, on the Siddha Yoga path website, first as a live video stream and then as a webcast. The details are as follows:

Date: Saturday, October 3, 2020
Time: 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon Eastern Daylight Time, USA (live video stream)
7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time, USA (webcast)

Here is how you can prepare for this study session:

  • Read the talk from Study Session II—Establish Your Posture
    • Practice the posture instructions given in the talk.
    • Use your sadhana journal to reflect on and explore what you’ve learned.
  • Prepare a space that is conducive for study.
    • Ensure you have everything you need for the study session, such as an asana, a shawl, The Nectar of Chanting, and your sadhana journal.

Stay safe, everyone!

Warm regards,

I had an insightful experience during the study session when Swami Akhandananda guided us to create an affirmation. He invited us to become quiet, to connect to the space of the Heart, and from that space, to see what words for an affirmation would arise. As I savored my experience of the Heart, the words "With every breath, I am with God" arose in me.

Later, when I repeated the words of the affirmation, I experienced the Heart. I understood that one leads to the other. As the Heart had led to my affirmation, now the affirmation is my immediate pathway that leads me to return again and again to the Heart.

I am sharing my enthusiasm for the study sessions on svadhyaya purely out of joy! How great to feel like a new student and discover things about my actions that I haven’t noticed before. After last week’s session on posture, I realized that I sway a lot. This past week I have been watching the strong winds whipping through the willows on the other side of the river. Today, reciting Shri Guru Gita, I noticed I was swaying again and recalled the willows swaying in the wind. But it was easy for me to adjust and allow the sweet energy of the verses to just flow upwards. The only movement was my eyes traveling over the verses!
