I participated in Meditation Session I via webcast with my mother at my parents’ farm. Earlier, we had gone for a japa walk together, and I had returned feeling invigorated and happy. That state stayed with me as we tuned into the live audio stream.
As soon as we started chanting, I could feel the vibrations of the mantra throughout my body, from the tips of my fingers down to my toes. This delightful energy was even stronger toward the center of my chest and up the back of my neck into my head. As I focused my awareness on the sensation of these pulsations running through me, I became aware of a loving energy radiating out from me, from my head in particular, and sensed that the edges of my body now felt fuzzy and indistinct. The question arose: “What is inside and what is outside?”
My thoughts, the sounds around me, the vibrations within, the larger movements of my body—each of these were all different forms of one same energy. I understood that the distinction between inside and outside was ultimately an illusion, and I had the sense that if I kept focusing on the vibrations of the mantra, “I” would eventually dissolve into the mantra completely. I was pulsating bliss!
Since this session, I’ve made it a practice to remember that energy pulsating within. Each time I return to this awareness, I can feel the subtle vibrations afresh, even when I’m not meditating. Focusing in this way has become a clear path for me to the madhya.
